ON THIS DAY

On this date in 1935, a car exceeded 300 mph for the very first time. The guy was still late for work.

In 1951, the soap opera "Search for Tomorrow" debuted on CBS. While the search continued for a lot of years, they were always one day behind.

On this date in 1967, the TV show "What's my line?" ended after 17 years when someone finally pointed out, "There. That's your line!"

In 1970, a 17.5 inch hailstone landed in Kansas. In no time at all, it started yelling, "I'm melting! I'm melting! What a world."

On this date in 1980, a 17 and a half inch hailstone landed in Kansas. Right next to guy holding on to a bottle of Scotch. Is that a sign or what?

TODAY IS

Charlie Sheen turns 45 today. He won't celebrate today any differently than he celebrates every other day.

One of the Beach Boys, Al Jardine, turns 68 today. I believe he was also the guy who invented the first surfboard with a rail.

Mort Walker, the cartoonist who gave us "Beetle Bailey" and "Hi and Lois" turns 87 today. May his job jar always be empty.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

The new movie, "Machete," includes a Lindsay Lohan nude scene. Her first one on film.

The Hollywood Reporter says Sylvester Stallone, Condoleezza Rice, Tim Allen, Ann Coulter and Suzanne Somers turned down "Dancing with the Stars."

Hollywood's possible new mega-star couple: they've been seen having dinner lately -- Charlize Theron and Sean Penn. She's 35, he's 50.

Cameron Diaz and Alex Rodriguez are now said to be officially "an item."

Rapper "T.I." and his wife were arrested on alleged possession of drug charges after a traffic stop Wednesday night.

Everything is going well with Celine Dion's pregnancy. Still on track for delivering twins in November.

After her latest Las Vegas arrest, the Wyn hotel has banned Paris Hilton from their premises.

A North Carolina farmer has pulled an emerald from a pit near rows of corn on his farm in Hiddenite. It's so large it's being compared with the crown jewels of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia.

Dr. Oz went in for his 50th birthday colonoscopy in June and doctors found a precancerous growth inside his intestine. If not detected, it could have turned into colon cancer. Get checked!

"Full House" star Jodie Sweetin gave birth to her second child, a baby girl named Beatrix.

OTHER STUFF...

How do you know you're going to be fired? According to Fortune magazine, here are 8 signs that you could be on your way out.

1.You don't fit in. Your values don't match the company's.

2.Your boss doesn't like you and you don't like him or her. If your boss never asks your opinion, and never wants to chat or have lunch with you, and if you disagree with her agenda and dislike her style, your days are numbered.

3.Your peers don't like you.

4.You don't get assignments that demonstrate the full range of your abilities.

5.You always get called upon to do the "grunt work."

6.You are excluded from meetings your peers are invited to.

7.Everyone on your level has an office. You have a cubicle in the hallway.

8.You dread going to work and feel like you're developing an ulcer.

Food expiration dates: What do they really mean?
On average, in the U.S. we waste about 14% of the food we buy each year. The average American family of four throws out around $600 worth of groceries every year.

Which five foods are most often feared as being unsafe after the printed date?
According to ShelfLifeAdvice.com, we are most wary of milk, cottage cheese, mayonnaise, yogurt, and eggs, and the site offers these helpful explanations:

1.Milk: If properly refrigerated, milk will remain safe, nutritious, and tasty for about a week after the sell-by date and will probably be safe to drink longer than that, though there’s a decline in nutritional value and taste.

2.Cottage cheese: Pasteurized cottage cheese lasts for 10-14 days after the date on the carton.

3.Mayonnaise: Unopened, refrigerated Kraft mayonnaise can be kept for 30 days after its expiration date or 3-4 months after opening, the company told ShelfLifeAdvice.

4.Yogurt: Yogurt will remain good 7-10 days after its sell-by date.

5.Eggs: Properly refrigerated eggs should last at least 3-5 weeks after the sell-by date, according to Professor Joe Regenstein, a food scientist at Cornell University. Note: Use of either a sell-by or expiration (EXP) date is not federally required, but may be state required, as defined by the egg laws in the state where the eggs are marketed.

Here is some interesting BEHIND THE SCENES AMERICAN IDOL stuff we can chat about for some prep...
Seven things you never knew about the making of "American Idol"

Auditions
There's simply not enough time for judges to audition thousands of people in stadiums around the country. That's why the group first gets whittled down by scouts to the best and worst that the crowd has to offer. The producers then listen to the survivors. If someone makes it past those two stages, then it's on to the judges.

Living quarters
In early seasons, cameras showed contestants sharing rooms in a mansion equipped with a pool, a gym and a live-in chef. In later years, contestants got more privacy by residing in apartments at The Marlow in Los Angeles. These days you can find them at one or the other, depending on the season.

Wardrobe
Contestants are aspiring singers, not fashion designers. Although each contestant is given a weekly stipend to use toward clothes and accessories, they work with stylists to help them select their wardrobe and look.

Family spotlight
Fox loves to catch the raw emotion of family and friends watching someone they love perform on a national stage. To make sure they don't miss these moments, the show rotates family members to a prime front row seat when their special someone performs.

Songs
Contestants get an hour or so to pick a song for the upcoming week's theme, and they typically have lots of options. For example, there were 120 selections for this year's R&B episode. Contestants can also choose songs from outside the list, but if producers can't get permission from the artist, the contestant has to scramble to find another number to perform.

Weekly schedules
After picking songs Thursday, contestants spend Friday rehearsing with vocal coaches. Over the weekend, they film commercials and special segments. They also go clothes shopping. When Monday rolls around, they're ready to rehearse. On Tuesday, the day of the live show, contestants rehearse their numbers three times on stage to ensure proper sound and camera placement.

Post-elimination
So what happens after a contestant is eliminated from "American Idol"? All the contestants, including the eliminated one, go to dinner and everyone takes a moment to talk about the one who's leaving. The next day brings media interviews. After the show announces a winner, the top 10 move on to the live tour.
